working with ubuntu in the terminal window the problem was how to get to the root user to get things installed.
basically:
sudo bash
sudo -s
then to get a file executable:
chmod a+x someFile
to copy files from somewhere to there:
cp somewhere there
somwhere and there being path/someFileName
